What Are Allied Health Services Under the NDIS?

Allied health is a broad term covering health professionals who aren't doctors or nurses but provide specialised clinical services. Under the NDIS, allied health is typically funded under Capacity Building — either Improved Daily Living or Improved Health and Wellbeing.

These services focus on building your capacity to do more, rather than just maintaining the status quo. The goal might be improving your communication, increasing your physical function, developing daily living skills, or managing the psychological impact of living with disability.

Allied Health Services We Provide

Occupational Therapy (OT)

Occupational therapists help you do the things you want and need to do in daily life. This might include assessing your home for modifications, recommending assistive technology, developing skills for self-care and cooking, ergonomic assessments, sensory processing support, and functional capacity evaluations.

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists work on your physical function — mobility, strength, balance, pain management, and rehabilitation after injury or surgery. For NDIS participants, physio often focuses on maintaining physical capacity, preventing deterioration, and building functional strength for daily activities.

Speech Pathology

Speech pathologists help with communication and swallowing difficulties. This covers speech and language therapy, augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) device assessment and training, stuttering therapy, social communication skills, and mealtime management for participants with swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).

Psychology

Psychologists provide assessment and therapy for mental health conditions that interact with disability. This might include cognitive behavioural therapy, anxiety and depression management, trauma-informed care, neuropsychological assessment, and coping strategies for living with disability.

Dietetics

Dietitians assess nutritional needs and develop eating plans that support your health. For NDIS participants, this might involve managing weight in the context of reduced mobility, addressing nutrition for participants with swallowing difficulties, mealtime planning for specific health conditions, and PEG feeding nutrition management.

Exercise Physiology

Our ESSA-accredited exercise physiologists design clinical exercise programs for participants with disability, chronic conditions, and complex health needs.

How Allied Health Works at MediHealth Connect

Referral and assessment. You can self-refer or be referred by your support coordinator, GP, or another health professional. Your allied health professional carries out an initial assessment to understand your needs and goals.

Goal-directed therapy. Every allied health service at MediHealth Connect is tied to your NDIS goals. We don't provide therapy for the sake of it — sessions are focused on outcomes that matter to you.

Coordination with your team. Your allied health professionals communicate with your support coordinator, community nurse, GP, and support workers. At MediHealth Connect, this coordination happens naturally because many of these services sit under the same organisation.

Progress reporting. We track and report on progress against your NDIS goals. This evidence is valuable at plan review time and helps demonstrate that your allied health funding is being used effectively.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a referral for NDIS allied health?

Not always. If your NDIS plan includes Capacity Building funding for Improved Daily Living, you can generally access allied health without a separate referral. However, a GP referral is recommended and can support future plan reviews.

Can I see multiple allied health professionals?

Yes. Many participants work with an OT, a physio, and a speech pathologist simultaneously. MediHealth Connect coordinates between these professionals so your care is joined up.

How are allied health sessions charged?

Sessions are charged at NDIS Price Guide rates. We don't charge above the maximum rate. Your support coordinator or plan manager can track utilisation.

Can allied health sessions happen via telehealth?

Yes. Many allied health services can be delivered via video call where clinically appropriate. This is particularly useful for participants in areas with limited local provider availability.
