Why Interpreting and Translating Matters Under the NDIS

South East Queensland is home to communities from all over the world. Many NDIS participants and their families speak languages other than English at home, and understanding the NDIS — with all its terminology, processes, and paperwork — is hard enough in English.

Without proper interpreting and translating, participants can miss out on services they're entitled to, misunderstand their plan, agree to things they don't fully comprehend, or struggle to communicate with providers.

Services We Arrange

Face-to-Face Interpreting

Professional interpreters attend meetings, appointments, and consultations in person. This is particularly valuable for NDIS planning meetings, medical appointments with complex information, support coordination meetings, and assessments by allied health professionals.

Telephone and Video Interpreting

For time-sensitive situations or when a face-to-face interpreter isn't available, telephone and video interpreting provides immediate access to language support. This works well for provider phone calls, quick queries and clarifications, follow-up conversations, and urgent situations.

Document Translation

NDIS plans, service agreements, care plans, and other important documents can be translated into the participant's preferred language. Understanding what you're signing and agreeing to is a basic right, and translated documents support informed decision-making.

Auslan (Australian Sign Language) Interpreting

For Deaf and hard-of-hearing participants, we arrange Auslan interpreters for meetings, appointments, and service interactions.

How Interpreting Is Funded

Interpreting and translating can be funded through your NDIS plan or through the Translating and Interpreting Service (TIS National), a free service provided by the Australian Government. In many cases, NDIS providers can access TIS National at no cost to the participant.

Your MediHealth Connect support coordinator can help you work out the most appropriate funding pathway for your interpreting needs.

Through our interpreting partners, we can arrange services in a wide range of languages commonly spoken in South East Queensland, including Arabic, Mandarin, Cantonese, Vietnamese, Korean, Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi, Samoan, Tongan, Farsi, Dari, Swahili, Burmese, Thai, Spanish, and many more.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to pay for interpreting services?

In most cases, no. Interpreting can be funded through your NDIS plan or through the free TIS National service. Your support coordinator will help arrange the most cost-effective option.

Can I use a family member as my interpreter?

While family members can help with day-to-day communication, professional interpreters are recommended for formal meetings, medical appointments, and legal documents. Professional interpreters are impartial, trained in confidentiality, and understand NDIS terminology.

How far in advance do I need to book an interpreter?

For face-to-face interpreting, we recommend booking at least 48 hours in advance. Telephone interpreting can often be arranged at shorter notice. Auslan interpreters may require longer lead times due to availability.
